Each team’s total points are calculated based on their performance in T20 International matches over a certain period of time.
What are T20I points in the ICC?
In the competitive sphere of international cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 team rankings serve as a barometer of a team’s standing on the global stage.
The ICC calculator, a tool designed to estimate a cricket team’s position in these rankings, uses a complex algorithm that takes into account a team’s performance in recent matches.
The rankings are calculated over a 12-month period, with the weightage of games reducing as they age.
The ICC T20 team rankings hold significant importance for national teams, as they play a crucial role in determining qualification for the World Cup main event or the qualifiers.
The top eight teams on the ICC cut-off date secure direct entry into the main event, while the next set of teams compete for a few remaining spots in the qualifiers.
The calculator focuses on one match at a time, providing an estimate of the points a team will gain based on the match outcome.
The calculation of ICC T20 rankings primarily depends on the team’s current standings. The winning margin, whether in terms of runs or wickets, does not influence the points gained by the team.
The data for wins and losses is collected over a duration, typically 12 months, and the points accumulated for each win or loss are calculated.
The total sum of points is then divided by the number of matches played to obtain the rating value used to rank the teams. As of 2022, there are 91 teams in the ranking table.
The points gained for each match depend on several factors, including the pre-match ratings of both sides, the difference between the pre-match ratings, and the standing of the winning team.
The points are calculated as follows:
Rating difference | Team | Result | Points gained |
---|---|---|---|
<40 | Team 1 | wins | Opponent’s rating + 50 |
Team 2 | loses | Opponent’s rating – 50 | |
tie | Opponent’s rating | ||
>40 | Stronger team | wins | Own rating + 10 |
Weaker team | loses | Own rating – 10 | |
Stronger team | ties | Own rating – 40 | |
Weaker team | ties | Own rating + 40 | |
Stronger team | loses | Own rating – 90 | |
Weaker team | wins | Own rating + 90 |
To calculate the points per match, one needs to enter the rating for both teams and select the result of the match from the list. The ICC calculator will then return the points gained by each team.
For instance, if England (Team 1) with a rating of 248 plays against Australia (Team 2) with a rating of 275, and Team 1 wins, the points calculation would be as follows:
Team 1 gains = 275 (Opponent’s rating) + 50 = 325
Team 2 gains = 248 (Own rating) – 50 = 198
These points are then added to the teams’ current tally, and the total points are divided by the number of matches played to calculate the new team ratings.
As of February 2022, England leads the men’s ICC T20 rankings with 9354 points from 34 matches, resulting in a team rating of 275.
In the women’s ICC T20 rankings, Australia leads with 5824 points from 20 matches, resulting in a team rating of 291.
How are T20I Points Calculated?
The points for each match a team plays are calculated using the following formula:
Points = Match Result Points x Opponent Strength
The Match Result Points are awarded as follows:
- Win: 2 points
- Tie, No Result, or Abandoned: 1 point
- Loss: 0 points
The Opponent Strength is a factor based on the ranking of the opponent. It’s calculated as 50% of the opponent’s rating points at the start of the series plus 50 points.
The total points a team has are then divided by the total number of matches played to give a rating, which is used to rank the teams. The team with the highest rating is ranked first.
Please note that the ICC updates its ranking methodology from time to time, so it’s always a good idea to check the latest information from the official ICC website.

Frequently Asked Questions
What are the factors affecting ICC T20 team rankings?
The ICC T20 team rankings are influenced by a variety of factors. These include the pre-match ratings of both teams involved in the match, the difference between the ratings of the two teams, and the outcome of the match. A victory against a higher-rated team yields more points, rewarding underdogs for their triumphs against stronger sides.
How do I calculate ratings for winning a T20 match?
The calculation of ratings gained or lost per match involves a three-step process. First, determine the number of points gained. Next, add these points to the team’s current tally. Finally, divide the total points by the number of matches played. A victory in a match will result in more points gained, thereby increasing the team’s average rating. Conversely, a loss will yield fewer points, leading to a decrease in the team’s rating.
